There's a ton of cute boutique shops with clothes and home decor, bookstores, Raygun, and fun places to eat around this part of Downtown! Depending on what hotel you're staying in it might be a 15-25 minute walk.
If you're feeling like being active, this is a 2.1-mile looped trail around the lake. This is a little bit outside of Downtown Des Moines though, so you'll most likely have to Uber here if you didn't rent a car. You’ll find snacks, drinks and watercraft rentals available for purchase on weekday evenings and weekends. Types of watercraft available to rent include canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, row boats and sailboats — with life vests provided complimentary with each rental.
Living History Farms is in Urbandale, Iowa so outside of Downtown Des Moines. You'll need to uber here if you didn't rent a car. This is a 500-acre open-air museum where you travel at your own pace through historical time periods in Iowa spanning 300 years. It's actually super cool.
