How We Met

Match Made in Heaven

During the early days of COVID in May of 2020, Madeline decided to download the dating app Hinge to try to get a taste of the Portland dating scene. She'd moved to Portland from Arizona just a month before and desperate, lockdown times called for desperate, dating measures. As she sat at home she stumbled upon a handsome man, Joey, and the two soon matched. However, after some brief conversations Madeline deleted the app suddenly, never to be heard from again... Or so Joey probably thought. Fast forward a few months to September 2020. Madeline's best friend, Bebe, had just moved to Portland. As single girls in a new city they decided to download Bumble (another dating app) to, again, see what the Portland dating scene had to offer. After one terrible first date, Madeline held a girls night with Bebe and another friend to debrief the date and look through her other connections. Enter Joey. With the help of some liquid courage and the immeasurable encouragement from female friends, Madeline told Joey to take her on a date. Joey, being a smart man, did just that. On October 12, 2020, Madeline and Joey had their first date at Kennedy School. If you ask them about their first impressions of one another Madeline would say she was instantly attracted to Joey's deep voice and ruggedly good looks, while Joey would say Madeline was wearing a very "interesting" hat. Conversation flowed throughout the date as the couple talked about all the things you're not supposed to talk about on a first date like politics, religion, etc. But that openness and vulnerability showed the couple they very quickly had the same values and dreams for their future. After dinner, Joey introduced Madeline to the dog he'd adopted just 2 months prior, Blessing, who'd be waiting in the car the entire time. That night, the 3 took their first of many walks together. As they strolled around the beautiful homes in the Cully neighborhood, Blessing twisted the two in her leash as if it were 101 Dalmatians and the two shared their first kiss. Two days later, the pair had a 2nd date in Vancouver where they walked along the waterfront and enjoyed jumbo $23 margaritas before returning home to watch John Mulaney stand-up. After that, their dates are hard to keep track of. The two continued to see each other multiple times a week as it quickly became clear there was something special here. Now 4 years later, the couple is set to be wed at the same place on the same day that they met back in 2020.
