Rio Beaches

Rio Beaches

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

This is self-explanatory! Enjoy the bustling atmosphere of Copacabana and Ipanema, or venture to Barra for a more (well, maybe) quiet beach day. Make sure to wear your skimpiest bathing suit (speedos and thong bikinis encouraged), get some grilled cheese and shrimp skewers from the vendors, and drink fresh coconut water to stay hydrated. Note: Keep an eye on your belongings/valuables, and do not leave them unattended at any time

Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer

Alto da Boa Vista, RJ 22261, Brazil

I (Maddy) thought this would be a tourist trap, but I was proven SO wrong. The Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue is the most iconic site in Rio, standing at 98 feet tall (with a 92 ft. armspan!) at the summit of Mount Corcavado in Tijuca National Park. The statue itself (himself?) and the surrounding 360 degree views of the city are breathtaking. Make sure to book tickets for the tram!

Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain

R. ALTO ZEFERINO - PÃO DE AÇÚCAR, RJ 57400-000, Brazil

More stunning panoramic views! Take the two cable cars (bondis) to the top and take in the city and the bay. Book tickets in advance for this as well. The scenery is beautiful at any time of day, but the sunsets are especially spectacular.

Lapa / Escadaria Selarón

Lapa / Escadaria Selarón

Rua Manuel Carneiro, Santa Teresa, RJ 20241-120, Brazil

If you're looking for a night out filled with samba music and dancing, live music, and lively bars and restaurants, head to Lapa! While you are there be sure to check out the Selarón mosaic steps. The staircase is made up of 215 steps, covered in over 2,000 tiles collected from over 60 countries around the world. Be sure to read more about the artist, Jorge Selarón. Note: We do not recommend being in this specific area too late at night. In the later hours, it is safer to stay on the main streets where the bars and clubs are, and take Ubers rather than walk long distances

Day Trip to Angra dos Reis

Day Trip to Angra dos Reis

If you plan on staying in Rio for a little longer, and have time for a full day trip to Angra dos Reis (~2.5 hours from the city) - you can book a group or private speedboat tour and visit the islands (Botinas Island is pictured), blue lagoons and remote beaches. This was a highlight of Maddy's first trip to Rio. Some options on TripAdvisor are linked here.

Búzios Beaches

Búzios Beaches

There are 20+ gorgeous beaches to visit, each with their own special charm: Geriba, near Serena Hotel ans Espelho Das Águas, is known to be a vibrant party beach, Tartaruga Beach is great for water sports, and Ferradura Beach is peaceful and quiet, for example. Many tourists rent dune buggies to ride around the island and visit different beaches in one day. There are many excellent restaurants and bars along the beaches as well (some beaches sit-down restaurants nearby, and others have beach bars and shacks), so you'll always have something good to eat.
