Maddy remembers spotting a tall, dark-haired boy across the room in Suites 310, proudly wearing a “Dilly Dilly” t-shirt. Matt, meanwhile, couldn’t take his eyes off the blue-eyed beauty with the playful energy. To this day, they still tease each other about who made the first move - but they’ve agreed it was mutual.
Matt thought he’d play it smart - take Maddy to open skate at Schneider Arena and impress her with his years of hockey experience. And to his credit, the skating went well. But when he accidentally spilled his wine on her, well...it turned out to be the perfect way to break the ice. From that night on, they became fast friends, bonding over shared values and a balance of working hard and having fun. Maddy “helped” with Matt’s papers, and Matt “helped” with Maddy’s accounting homework - a dream team dynamic that continues today, with Maddy writing this while Matt, the self-proclaimed house CFO, manages the wedding budget.
On November 17, 2018, after a few too many drinks, Matt leaned over and told Maddy, “I’m going to ask you to be my girlfriend tomorrow.” Real subtle, Matt. The next day, he followed through with a charming Newport day trip, popping the question along the Cliff Walk. Maddy laughed at his phrasing, "be my girl" - but let's face it. She definitely is.
On February 17, 2019, Matt received a Snapchat memory from the year before that made them both laugh. In it, he was in a bathroom stall, filming the feet of two tipsy girls next door with the caption: “They won’t stop singing to my music and trying to talk to me.” When they watched it together, they immediately recognized the white Adidas sneakers and socks - belonging to none other than Maddy and her partner in crime, Tara Cooney. So technically, Maddy’s first words to Matt came long before his to her. They like to think of it as their invisible string, quietly connecting them from the very start.
After graduating from Providence College, Matt and Maddy took their first steps into post-grad life together, both starting their “big kid” jobs on June 7, 2021. Today, Matt works as an investment professional in the world of finance, while Maddy is a director at a health insurance company. Neither fully understands what the other does, but what they do understand is how to cheer each other on, celebrate the wins, nod supportively during work stories, and confidently pretend to understand each other's acronyms.
Six months after graduation, Matt and Maddy bought their first home: a cozy condo in South Boston, all 707 square feet of it. While Maddy wished for a bigger closet, they both quickly fell in love with the hustle and bustle of the city, and the convenient 12-minute walk to the beach. Who needs a walk-in closet when you have the ocean that close and all your friends just a stroll away?
Much to Matt’s reluctance, Maddy and Matt expanded the family by welcoming “Charlie” (a.k.a their pride and joy, King Charles) into their home. This decision was especially meaningful for Maddy, as it came shortly after her childhood cat, Oreo (also a tuxedo) passed away at 16. When Charlie came across in need of a new home, it felt like a sign that he was meant to be theirs. The self-proclaimed cat-hater soon transformed into a doting cat Dad and Charlie's biggest fan.
On a beautiful summer afternoon, Maddy and Matt went out for lunch in the Seaport, planning to meet up with friends afterward. As they strolled toward their next destination, with the Boston skyline as their backdrop, Matt asked Maddy to marry him. She said YES! An impromptu engagement shoot followed - completely catching Maddy by surprise - before they continued on their way. Overwhelmed with love and gratitude, Maddy walked into the next spot to find all their friends and family waiting to celebrate with them. Matt might not be known for surprises, but on August 3, 2024, he absolutely nailed it.
Matt hated cats so much, he just had to get Charlie a friend. Matt and Maddy welcomed Peaches from Georgia (a.k.a Princess Peach, Stinky Winky, Peacheroni, Charlie’s lover). Charlie and Peaches fell for each other just as quickly as Maddy and Matt did.
A big part of their life together has been all the adventures they've shared. It began during Maddy’s junior year studying abroad in London, when Matt came to visit. From that trip, their journey of exploring the world began. They’ve wandered the streets of D.C. and NYC, lounged on sunny beaches in Cabo, Aruba, and South Carolina, (Matt) bravely pitched tents in New Hampshire and Vermont (he handles all spider negotiations), tasted the vineyards of Napa Valley, and roamed the colorful streets of San Francisco. The only downside is leaving their kitties behind - though Matt has fortunately installed enough Ring cameras to keep tabs on his children. They’re now looking forward to a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon in Africa, combining a Kenya and Tanzania safari during the Great Migration with a beach oasis in Zanzibar. They’re also adding a few days in Paris along the way, because there’s truly no better time to visit the City of Love.
As we reflect on our journey together, we’re filled with gratitude for the love, laughter, and little moments that have brought us here. We’re truly enjoying this special season in our lives, and savoring every joyful moment leading up to the big day. We can't wait to celebrate our wedding with all of you. Here's to many more memories, milestones, and happy days ahead!
