A long time ago, in the fall of 2020, Simon and Maddie met on Hinge (a dating app, for those of you not familiar) in the midst of a pandemic. Their first date consisted of a walk in a blizzard, on the Lee Gulch Trail in Littleton, CO. Both parties lived within 8 minutes of the meeting point and Simon greeted Maddie with a warm Starbucks beverage. Maddie brought Basil, her Aussiedoodle puppy. This was Basil’s first snow experience, and was also before Basil had ever had a haircut. He looked like a Wookiee. Maddie and Simon quickly discovered that Basil’s long fur attracted snowballs and before long, his feet were coated in snowballs to the point where he couldn’t walk well. The two strangers stopped and picked off snowballs until Basil could walk comfortably again. Maddie was impressed by Simon’s caring and patient nature when handling her precious pup. The two also bonded over their opinions on the political climate, their interests in healthcare, and passion for caring for others. About an hour after the date, Maddie got notice from one of her schools (she was working in person at two elementary schools at the time) that she had to quarantine for two weeks due to a Covid exposure. Maddie notified Simon, who came up with the idea to have a virtual second date involving cooking the same meal together. The second date took place on Halloween and went very well. Date three involved a hike, food from Angelo’s, and champagne to celebrate the confirmation of the 2020 election results. Fast forward to present day and the world is a mess, but Simon and Maddie continue to build their lives together, through the ups and the downs. Many adventures have been had along the way, Simon completed nursing school, and Maddie is going into her 7th year as a school-based Occupational Therapist. Basil, at the age of 5 now, is especially excited that his parents are getting married (he will not be at the wedding, unfortunately, due to his extreme love of humans).
