Things To Do

Watauga River Put-In

Watauga River Put-In

811 2/8 U.S. 321, Sugar Grove, NC 28679

For all of our whitewater kayaking friends, our venue is just past the Watauga Gorge put-in for some fun class 4 creeking! The above photo shows Maddie paddling the Watauga’s most famous drop: Stateline Falls located (as you might’ve guessed) on the Tennessee/North Carolina state line.

Twisting Falls

Twisting Falls

Dark Ridge Road, Butler, TN 37640

Twisting falls (or better known as Compression Falls to the local kayaking community) is a beautiful waterfall located about 30 minutes from Sugar Grove, NC. Maddie frequented the waterfall growing up in nearby Johnson City, TN, and loves to swim at the base of and cliff jump off the top the falls. Unsurprisingly, Elijah prefers kayaking off of the falls when the water is high enough. The hike to the falls is very steep, but short and would be a perfect afternoon getaway to swim or explore!

Blowing Rock

Blowing Rock

432 The Rock Road, Blowing Rock, NC 28605

Sugar Grove North Carolina sits 20 minutes away from the famous Blowing Rock! From visitnc.com: “The Blowing Rock is an immense cliff 4,000 feet above sea level, overhanging Johns River Gorge 3,000 feet below. The phenomenon gets its name because the rocky walls of the gorge form a flume through which the northwest wind seeps with such force that it returns light objects cast over the void. The current of air flowing upward from the Rock prompted the Ripley’s Believe-It-Or-Not cartoon about “the only place in the world where snow falls upside down.” Enjoy the scenic views and observation tower, gardens, and hiking trails.”

Sugar Mountain/Beech Mountain

Sugar Mountain/Beech Mountain

1009 Sugar Mountain Drive, Banner Elk, NC 28604

Only a 30 minute drive away from our venue in Sugar Grove, NC are multiple ski resorts that Maddie and Elijah frequent every winter. Sugar and Beech Mountain resorts are our local favorites. With Beech Mountain’s $20 lift ticket weeknight specials you’ll be hard pressed to find a better deal to get you out on the slopes in this region. Unfortunately our wedding date is a bit too early in the season for the resorts to be open; however, we’re adding this info here in the hopes that we can convince you to come skiing with us this winter!

Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain

A part of the United Nations’ Southern Appalachian Biosphere Reserve, the mountain is estimated to be 300 million years old — with certain rock formations dating back 1.2 billion years. You can pay to enter the scenic travel attraction side of the park or hike into the undeveloped sections of the park owned by the state of North Carolina and explore famous and rugged trails like the Profile Trail or the Daniel Boone Scout Trail which are free of admission.

Linville Caverns

Linville Caverns

19929 U.S. 221, Marion, NC 28752

Trashcan Falls
