Madelynn and I (Roland) met at the beginning of our freshman year at the University of Michigan, where we lived down the hall from each other. Some friends and I walked into her dorm room, and I instantly wooed her by showing her the scar on my arm and flashing my smile. In reality, I repeatedly returned to her room every day, telling her everything about my life while trying to get her to answer my questions with something other than "I don't know." This led to us talking with each other for hours. A relationship that started five days into freshman year has evolved into a five year journey together.

Hiking is one of our favorite things to do together, so when Roland suggested we go on a hike on a random Wednesday evening, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Thinking that the proposal was still 1-2 months away, I (Madelynn) suspected nothing. In short, Roland tried to hurry me along the trail to his designated proposal spot while I stopped to look at every leaf, educational sign, and butterfly along the trail. We eventually made it to the spot he had chosen, he got on one knee, and that was that.
