When Troy met Lydia

How We Met Lydia and Troy's story began in the most modern of ways – on Instagram. Although they both went to Renaissance High School in Detroit, they didn’t really know each other. But in August of 2020, with Lydia in her second year of law school and Troy on the brink of closing on his first home while starting a new role at Detroit Diesel, Troy reached out to Lydia. Soon after, on August 29, they met in person for the first time at La Feria in Detroit’s Midtown for an evening of wine, Spanish tapas, and laughter. By the end of the night, Lydia was ordering a late-night grilled chicken pita from the local Coney Island, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. A Shared Love of Adventure Together, Lydia and Troy share a love of history, movies, travel, and wine. Their first adventure together was a road trip up the West Coast, where they explored San Francisco, sipped wine in Napa and Sonoma Valleys, and drove along the stunning California coastline. Along the way, they visited Lydia’s family in Los Angeles, and by the end of the trip, they were ready to take on even bigger adventures. The following year, they set off for Europe to celebrate Lydia finishing the bar exam. They traveled from Amsterdam, where Lydia introduced Troy to the city’s iconic cannabis culture, to Brussels, where they discovered the Grand Place by surprise on an evening stroll. Paris brought them to the site of the Bastille – now an opera house, despite Troy’s countless historical references to the battle there. In Geneva, they enjoyed the best lemonade they’d ever had at the Museum of Natural History and Art, and in Milan, they found heat, excitement, and great food. They ended their trip in Edinburgh, visiting Lydia’s cousin Rebecca, where they encountered the city’s vibrant arts festival and fell in love with its energy. By the end of their travels, Lydia knew that with Troy by her side, every adventure was even better. The Proposal After returning home, Lydia began her career as an attorney while Troy continued to make his 90-year-old Rosedale Park house a home. Then, on December 29, 2023, Troy proposed to Lydia at La Feria, bringing them back to where it all began. With a custom-designed ring from Simmons and Clark, a historic Detroit jeweler close to Lydia’s office, Troy’s “sneaky” plan turned their beloved date spot into a memory they’ll cherish forever. Building a Life Together These days, Lydia and Troy are working together on their latest venture: home renovation. Between visits to local coffee shops, the Eastern Market, and art museums, they recently completed a kitchen renovation, bringing their shared love for design, project management, and espresso into their own home. With so many adventures behind them and countless more to come, Lydia and Troy are ready to embark on their greatest one yet: marriage.
