How We Met

Not your typical Bumble story

The short answer is we matched on Bumble, went on our first date at a brewery, and it was history. But in reality, we caught each other's eye exactly one month and a day before our first date while waiting in line for a shuttle to the start of the bridge run (a big 10K in Charleston every April). --- The Shuttle Story --- Lukia's version: I was running late and got into the shuttle line at the last minute after parking too far away to take the ferry. The shuttles were taking forever to arrive and I was irked that I didn’t drive to the start. I started chatting to a guy standing next to me in line-- complaining about the nonexistent busses. The guy's friend caught my eye-- he was super tall, blond, and very cute. I got a glimpse of his name on his bib (when trying to also see his age) and saw it was Tucker. But since he didn't join in to commiserate about the wait, I assumed he didn't live here. Tucker's version: I was standing in line for the shuttle when I noticed Lukia. Her beauty, of course, caught my eye, but what's funny is how we were both checking each other out so subtly (that is, completely unbeknownst to each other), while both thinking there was no way the other was single, the other had to be from out of town (after all, she did have her Wake hat on!). --- The Date: A Month and A Day Later --- We matched on Bumble in late April and during the course of a lengthy first phone call, Tucker asked Lukia out on their first date. Lukia suggested we meet at Estuary, a brewery over on John's Island. She joked about bringing her dog Scout, but decided not to since Scout is a bit of an attention seeker (put lightly). We talked nonstop for almost three hours, forgetting to even eat dinner (and neither of us likes to miss a meal). About midway through the date, Lukia asked Tucker if he did the bridge run, since he said he mentioned he does triathlons. It was that moment we realized that we’d “met" before: when Tucker said, "I think you were on my bus. Were you wearing a Wake Forest hat?"
