We originally planned a "micro wedding" with just our parents and siblings at The Line Hotel in Washington, DC to take place on March 4th, 2021. With COVID cases rising at the time, DC imposed a ten person gathering restriction in the city so our plans had to change. The date March 4th is really special to us since we met that day in 2018 so we decided to keep that wedding date but change the location...just the two of us eloped to Tucson, AZ! Here is our photographers blog post about our elopement day! https://www.loveandadventurephoto.com/marylandweddingphotography/2021/3/15/university-of-arizona-elopement-caroline-and-luke-saguaro-national-park-adventure-elopement We have rescheduled our original family ceremony for May 20th in DC back at The Line Hotel. We will then be having a small after party with local friends on The Line's main Vela rooftop at 7pm. Details to follow!
Despite both growing up in Maryland, playing in competitive soccer leagues (even in the same soccer tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden as teens), and attending the University of Arizona, it took the internet to bring us together. We went on our first date on March 4th, 2018 after swiping right on Bumble. Caroline immediately liked that he was adventurous, spoke French fluently and had a nice beard. Luke liked that she was well-traveled, loved sports and that she had a crush on Lute Olsen. We met up on a Sunday for happy hour old fashioneds and Timber pizza. A quick drink meet-up turned into a six-hour first date and voilà, here we are today! We both felt that date was something special, but who knew we'd end up getting married exactly three years to the day later!
Luke planned a three-night, four-day camping/canoeing trip along the South Fork of the Shenandoah River for Caroline's birthday. On the morning of day two, our overpacked canoe hit a Class II rapid we were told would be no problem to manage. As novice canoers, we hit that rapid straight on and ended up capsizing, dumping all our camping gear, Wilbur and ourselves into the river. Luckily, Wilbur survived with his life jacket on and we were able to recover most of our things. Drenched and laughing, we realized that our one bag of food and cooking supplies had sunk to the bottom of the river and we had to cut our trip short. Panicking because his plan for a fireside proposal that evening was now botched, Luke improvised and asked Caroline to marry him on the side of the river, life jackets and all.
