This can be done in one day but is highly recommended to visit for 3 days. Lake Atitlan is surrounded by rugged hills, a trio of towering volcanoes, and a handful of Mayan small villages. Panajachel is the lake’s main hub. From here, boats depart regularly for destinations like San Juan La Laguna, which is known for its hand-woven, naturally dyed textiles, and San Pedro, where intrepid visitors can summit a 3,020-meter (9,908-foot) volcano. The area also offers great opportunities to kayak, bike, and zip-line.

Can be done as a day tour or in combination with visiting Lake Atitlan. The crown jewel among the Peten’s 13,000 square miles is Tikal, a sprawling archaeological complex consisting of more than 3,000 structures. Countless more ruins still lie shrouded by dense forest overgrowth in the region, which also contains over 800 species of trees, 57 species of reptiles, and 500 species of birds. Tapirs, monkeys, peccararies and jaguars still roam the emerald forests.
