Yes, you will need some pesos on hand. Many small businesses and street vendors do not accept US currency or cards. You will also need some pesos to use public restrooms in markets, Xochimilco, etc. Large business, hotels, most restaurants will all accept credit cards. If it looks modern, they take cards. Down here, the US dollar does not get accepted everywhere like the resorts and they won’t have change, so steer clear of paying in cash less you have pesos.
The water here is not safe to drink. Bottled water only, and this includes ice. If it’s not at a nice restaurant or hotel, avoid ice in beverages. Go to any convenience store and load up on bottled water for your hotel room. Avoid any fruits and vegetables washed in tap water. Stay away from berries or fruit that is not peeled yourself, salads, and raw fish or undercooked or rare meat if it doesn’t come from a reputable restaurant or you cooked it yourself. A good rule of thumb is well done meats in Mexico :)
Yes, Mexico City is generally a very safe area, especially where we are staying. Unless you go rogue and decide to travel to more remote areas and neighborhoods, you are very safe to walk around and take public transportation like Uber. It is a high tourism city but like most countries, petty crime is everywhere in Mexico so just be smart about things. Don't wear anything of high value or flashy in nature to make yourself a target for pickpockets and theft in markets.
Most airport, hotel, and restaurant staff speak English as do many others so just ask. Everyone is very friendly and happy to help. However, Uber drivers and taxi drivers are unlikely to speak a lot of English as well as anyone at street markets so plan accordingly and maybe ask for assistance from Google Translate or one of our bilingual friends if you are with us.
The culinary scene in Mexico City is amazing and some of the best in the world. It is a melting pot of cultures so you can find just about anything you want. You can never go wrong, unless you do the things I told you not to do regarding the water.
Yes, transportation to and from the wedding venue will be arranged from a central location on wedding day for guests. Just pay attention to departure times. Wedding party will have their own separate transportation for earlier arrival to the venue.
Both! We will have a bilingual officiant and DJ so everyone can understand all of the things throughout the evening. Many of us, as well as our wedding planner, are also bilingual and can help.
We all never get a chance to dress up, so our dress code is formal. This means suits for men and evening or cocktail dressed for women. No jeans or casual wear please.
We would prefer this is a smoke free wedding, but if you are a smoker, there will be a designated smoking area far away from the reception hall for smokers. This includes vaping. All other areas are non smoking and this will be enforced. Please be respectful of our asks and nonsmoking guests. No marijuana at all please.
There is a grocery store called La Bodega Aurrerá on Bolívar. It is about 7 mins away from the hotel. Uber eats is also available to use internationally and you can have things delivered to the hotel to save you a trip as well you choose.
