Lucy and James first met when they were students at Robert G. Cole Jr-Sr High School when James was in 8th grade and Lucy was in 9th grade. At the time they were only casual acquaintances so when James' father retired and they moved off base, causing James to change schools, they lost touch and didn't think much of it. Ten years later their paths would cross again thanks to a mutual friend of theirs. Santana brought James along with him to meet up with Lucy at a bar on December 27, 2019. If you ask Lucy how it happened, she will tell you that when she saw James walk in, the skies parted, the angels sang, and a light shone down upon him from Heaven (but it's also entirely possible that it was just the headlights of a passing car). The next day they went to a Spurs game together and the day after that they had dinner together at the Tower of the Americas. James eventually had to go back to Dallas where he was working at the time but they still talked every day and traveled back and forth to see each other as often as they could. When the pandemic hit shortly after their relationship started, they decided to quarantine together in Dallas to help keep each other sane. After some time though, Lucy had to go back to the office in San Antonio and they were back to dating long distance. It only took a few months for them to decide they couldn't live apart any longer and made plans for James to move back down to San Antonio. James returned to San Antonio in August 2021 and since then, they have never looked back.
In November 2022 James and Lucy took a trip to Iceland without telling anyone. They figured they would just send a couple of postcards and let people find out that way (as they usually do when they travel). On a freezing cold night, they were out in the country side hunting for the Northern Lights. It was pitch black and you couldn't really see the Northern Lights unless you took a picture; James showed Lucy how to get the camera settings right and she made it her mission to take a great picture of the lights because seeing them was on James' bucket list. She was so dedicated to her task, though, that she didn't notice James was trying to propose. He even nudged her a few times, ring box in hand, but she still didn't realize what was happening. After snapping the perfect picture, she turned back to James and proudly showed him what she had taken for him. He said "Aw, thanks for working so hard to get that for me." to which she replied "Well yeah, of course. I was trying so hard because I knew you really wanted to see them and I love you so I wanted to get the picture for you." James, trying to be graceful and romantic, asked "Do you love me?" Lucy, in peak performance, laughed and said "Of course. Don't ask stupid questions." Then he laughed, got on one knee and said "Okay then. How's this -- Will you marry me?"
