Flight

✈️

—We expect most people will fly into the capital city at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. There's also a smaller airport in Brașov, but this means selecting from fewer flight options and flying with multiple airlines from the US (e.g. from NYC to London, then London to Brașov with two separate airlines). The upshot is the total door-to-door travel time is almost always longer when flying into Brașov than it is flying into Bucharest and taking the train/ driving to Brașov. —We will provide shuttles for those who want them. Depending group responses, shuttles from Bucharest will likely be scheduled for Thursday and Friday, in the morning and the afternoon. More details on this to come. —It's a ~2.5 hour drive from the Bucharest airport to Brașov.

Train

🚂

—You can also take a train, from Bucharest or any other nearby cities. From the Bucharest airport, take the train to Bucharest Nord station. From there it's a 2.5 hour, ~$20 ride to Brașov via CFR. —The trains are comfortable and are comparable to Amtrak, with AC, charging ports, and a snack cart. For more info:

Rental Car

🚗

—Renting a car in Romania is fairly straightforward and you can use common travel sites like Expedia or Kayak to get started. Cars are relatively cheap compared to the US (typically $30-$50 per day); however, if a price seems too good to be true (say, $5/day), it probably is. We also recommend getting the full damage package (i.e. no charge for any damages) to avoid any potential scams. —Your American license allows you to drive in Romania without an International Driving Permit. However, be advised that the driving situation in Romania is likely very different from what you are used to. —Most of the highways are two lanes only, which means overtaking can be hair raising. —Romania has a zero tolerance policy on drunk driving: the maximum blood alcohol content is 0.00 (compared to 0.08 in the US). —You may encounter farm animals and horse driven carts in the road. —Not all roads are lit at night. —Many rental cars have manual transmissions. Make sure you get an automatic transmission if that is what you prefer. For more information, visit the US embassy page:
