Question

I've never been to a Sikh wedding. What do I need to know?

Answer

We feel honored to have our wedding in the oldest Sikh temple in the United States: The Hollywood Gurdwara. There will be guides, but some quick notes: Upon arrival, you'll be asked to remove your shoes (there are safe bins in which to put them) and cover your head (there are lightweight scarves available, but feel free to bring something your own!). You'll take a seat on the carpeted floor in the service hall (men on the right, ladies on the left, per tradition, though no one side is intrinsically better than the other, and gender equality is a central tenet of the Sikh faith, just so you know!). Once you're in place, we'll get into it. The service will last about 45 minutes. The ragis (preachers who are also sick/Sikh musicians), will do kirtan (prayer sung to harmonium and tabla), and we will take four rounds of the Sikh bible (the Guru Granth Sahib) each representing a pillar of marriage, each bringing us one step closer to spending our lives together as husband and wife. xo

Question

What should I wear? Do I need to dress in traditional Indian attire?

Answer

We want you to wear whatever makes you fly the highest. This is an opportunity to wear something Indian (we will be!) but by no means should you feel any pressure to do the same. Wear any color or style of clothing you'd like. This is a celebration without restraints for all! Considerations in practicals: in the gurdwara (Sikh temple) we'll be seated on the ground, sans shoes with heads covered by scarves (provided by the gurdwara if you don't have one!)

Question

I want to dress in traditional Indian clothing. Where can I buy authentic Indian threads?

Answer

Little India in Artesia has a large selection, although it can be overwhelming. There are about 15 shops on Pioneer in all price ranges. If you're looking for something a little closer to LA or looking to keep your price low, then we suggest a store in downtown Santee Alley called Fashion Vogues (1008 Santee St). The shop is owned by the cutest guy named Happy Singh. The selection isn't huge, but there's a good chance you'll find something at a lower price than Little India. Traditional men's attire: kurta pajama, turban (wrapped Sikh style). Traditional women's attire: sari, anarkarli, or salwar kameez.

Question

What should I expect at the reception at Cinefamily?

Answer

An unusual(ly fun) reception! We don't want to give away all the surprises, but here are some basics: Cinefamily is a historic silent film theater here in LA that is now an art-house cinema which we are taking over for the afternoon! We'll have some of the best tacos in LA, horchata, agua frescas, an open bar, unlimited popcorn, and vegan/paleo/allergy friendly cakes by Sweet Laurel Bakery that will make you cry tears of goodness, vegan/regular crazy donuts and other such treats. We'll also have some very special music performances, and then we'll have a private screening of Harold & Maude. There will be a very strange and wonderful surprise after the movie. The food will be vegan and allergen friendly (there will also be an option for seafood eaters). The vibe will be most high. The rest we'll let you experience as it all unfolds. We can't wait!

Question

What is a "Harold & Maude"?

Answer

Only one of the greatest movies of all time! It came out in 1971 to mixed reviews. Now it is revered as a classic dark comedy and modern romance. One-liners. Fashion. Cat Stevens. You will laugh. You may cry. This movie has it all.

Question

Can I bring my kids?

Answer

Definitely!

Question

Is there parking for the ceremony or reception?

Answer

Parking is below the gurdwara or on the street. Street parking for Cinefamily can be tricky. There are meters and a nearby lot, but if you plan on taking advantage of the open bar, then uber is your best bet.

Question

Are there any other events that I should know about around the wedding?

Answer

Out of towners, please reach out to Amrit and Amber! We're working on something so we can get some more qt with you. xo
