It was Fall 2020, and though the leaves hadn’t yet started changing colors, Logan found himself entering a new chapter of life. It was his first semester at the University of Michigan, and he dove straight into the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering after transferring from Schoolcraft Community College. In Navarch 270, he took a seat in the front-left corner of the classroom, eager yet quietly observant, as he always is. Victoria entered the room last, wrapped in her long brown trench coat, with a hand-me-down longboard from her brother-in-law, which she used to make it to the bus on time. She slipped into the back row, taking a seat in the far-right corner, seemingly unnoticed. But Logan noticed. He always notices. With COVID masks concealing everyone’s faces, it was hard to recognize people, but Logan has this natural habit of scoping out his surroundings. Then, their eyes met across the room. For what felt like an eternity—but was really only a brief and fleeting moment—the world stilled. Victoria’s head wanted to turn away, but her eyes lingered. Normally, she’d analyze a situation like this and move on, indifferent to most gazes that lacked anything memorable. But Logan’s gaze was different. His eyes were gentle, and despite the masks, there was something about the crinkle at the corners that suggested a smile—a warmth that seemed to reach across the room. The warmest blue eyes she’d ever seen. And that fleeting glance was the prelude to their story. They went on with their lives that day, not knowing each other’s names or much about one another, as the world quickly shifted from hybrid and socially distanced classes to fully remote again. Victoria didn’t even fully remember that brief moment when she had locked eyes with Logan that day until much later, when they were already together and everything clicked. But eventually, they started talking via Zoom. They studied together, and more often than not, found themselves chatting long after the work was done. They chatted about everything: music, hobbies, books, musicals, sports, traveling, and dreams. In January of 2021, Victoria came back from winter break early to spend time with Logan in person. They had made plans based on all their Zoom conversations—rock climbing, musical marathons, and cooking new foods. Victoria’s roommate, noticing how much time they spent together on their outings, teasingly suggested they were courting. To kick off their "extravaganza palooza" of plans, Victoria suggested a 7 a.m. morning run. Unsurprisingly, Logan followed through, which is how he ended up running laps in an Ann Arbor cemetery on one of the slipperiest mornings of the year. This is the beginning of Victoria learning that Logan always follows through. Both Victoria and Logan knew their lives were becoming intertwined, but they were hesitant to make any forward moves, given how small their department was (their class year had 28 students total—26 gentlemen and only 2 ladies). Still, it was inevitable. Eventually, Logan asked, “Will you be my girlfriend?” Victoria, caught off guard and completely awestruck, accidentally responded with, “I do” instead of “yes.” This unexpected response threw Logan for a loop—he wasn’t quite sure if she had agreed or not… For the first few days of their relationship, he wasn’t entirely certain if they were officially together, but eventually, he got the hint. And that’s how everything began. We hope you can join us and witness when Logan hears Victoria say “I do” once again at the altar.
