One of our favorite travel destinations. Lots of opportunities for outdoor fun - ferry rides, shops, tandem biking, hiking, landmarks, beaches, kayaking, museums, tours, parasailing, and horses. NO cars on the island at all! Mackinac Island is just a quick ferry ride away from our venue, and it's a must-visit if you're new to Michigan! Don't leave without trying their world famous Mackinac Island fudge! Check out the ferry ticket prices online before you go - you can sail out of St. Ignace or cross the bridge and sail out of Mackinaw City (there is a $4 bridge toll each way). Star Line Ferry has a port right next door to our wedding venue (click "view" to be directed to their website), but check out Shepler's ferry as well (linked to the right) to compare prices/availability.
If you’re up for a quick 45-minute road trip straight up I-75, this is where we met and went to college. “The Soo” is a 5-minute drive (depending on bridge traffic) from its sister city in Canada, if you have your passport! Sault Ste. Marie is the oldest city in Michigan, so there’s a lot of history here. If you do decide to explore the Soo, check out some of our favorite places/attractions linked below!
If you have your passport and want to take your trip international, check out Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario! Just keep straight on I-75 until you run into the international bridge. There are lots of good places to shop, eat, and sightsee. Soo, Canada is about 50 minutes from St. Ignace, depending on traffic at customs. There is a $4 bridge toll each way.
Take a 2-hour cruise alongside giant freighters. You'll get to experience the rising and lowering of the locks and sail underneath the international bridge, all while learning the history of both Sault Ste. Marie cities and their landmarks.
90 minutes from St. Ignace, Tahquamenon Falls is another one of our favorite destinations. Visit the Upper and Lower Falls, or choose one. The park includes trails, scenic views, kayak rentals, museums, shops, a brewery, and food. If you don't mind a road trip through Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula, check it out!
Another 90-minute road trip from St. Ignace! If you're going to Tahquamenon Falls, you might as well stop here too! Whitefish Point has a beautiful beach, a shipwreck museum, and a walk-in lighthouse with a view of Canada across Lake Superior.
90 minutes south of St. Ignace is the place we call home. Houghton Lake is a beautiful town for fun or relaxation on the water, and it's where Logan proposed. The website is up-to-date on festivals, events, contests, attractions, things to do, and places to stay in Houghton Lake. If you do decide to visit, check out the beaches, boat rentals, and parks for things to do!
