San Miguel is a very safe place; however, it's always important to use common sense when you are traveling anywhere, whether in the US or internationally. We will have taxis ready outside Casa Chorro following the wedding reception so you won't have to worry about walking back to your hotel or rental house, although we have never had a problem walking in Centro at night.
San Miguel is a very walkable town and most things are a 5-10 minute walk away. If your feet get tired you can always take a taxi - they are safe and affordable in town. If you take a taxi, make sure you use a green or white one (these are official). Also make sure to agree on a rate to your destination before getting accepting the ride. A ride within the city should cost less than 100 pesos. If you are quoted higher, just ask if they will take less. Uber is also available in San Miguel.
San Miguel is a desert town so temperatures fluctuate quite a bit throughout the day. In April, temperatures are usually in the high 80s to low 90s in the afternoon. Mornings and evenings cool off nicely in the 60s and 70s. Bring layers & sunscreen!
We do NOT recommend renting a car. The narrow and hilly cobblestone streets are a large part of San Miguel's charm, and it would be very difficult to drive there. Check out the information on private transportation to and from the airport, listed on the Travel page. Once you're in the city it is extremely walkable, but pack comfortable shoes to navigate the hilly cobblestone streets! It's also easy to get a taxi if your feet need a break.
As with other Mexico destinations, avoid tap water unless it has been filtered. You can check with your hotel or rental house to ensure that your tap water is filtered. Ice and water served at most restaurants are typically purified but when it doubt, order bottled water! Bottled water is widely available and short term visitors are advised to use it to brush their teeth, too. DON'T FORGET to drink water! San Miguel is high in elevation so it's important to stay hydrated!
