Fire Island is a beautiful, unique place, and this lighthouse is truly a special sight. As it is fall, there is limited ferry service to Fire Island. However, you can still visit the lighthouse and walk down to Kismet and Saltaire like we usually do by going to Robert Moses State Park, parking at Field 5, then walking on the boardwalk path to the lighthouse and eventually the sandy Burma Road to Kismet.
There are lots of restaurants and shops in this historical nautical village. You can walk around the harbor and watch the boats and ferry. Port Jeff Brewery is here. There is also a well-regarded local theater putting on great plays and musicals. It is usually beautiful in the fall. The ferry goes to and from Bridgeport, Connecticut.
The Town of Brookhaven Wildlife and Ecology Center Animal Preserve has over 100 injured or non-releasable wild animals and farm animals that are available for viewing. The zoo is handicapped accessible. Also, feed machines for the goats are available for 25 cents a handful. Outside food is not permitted to feed the animals, due to their careful diet. Open 9am to 3pm weekdays and 10am to 3pm weekends. Good place to take the kids.
Avalon Park and Preserve is a privately owned nature preserve with the mission of maintaining a beautiful natural landscape in which visitors can enjoy the quietude of our natural habitats. This is Keith and Lisa's favorite park to stroll around on a nice day. There is a pond with lots of waterfowl, multiple paved and dirt trails, fields of flowers and beautiful trees. The park is gorgeous in the fall, but also popular. We recommend parking at the nearby Stony Brook Village Center and walking down. There are shops and restaurants at the Village Center, including Crazy Beans Coffee.
