How We Met

It all started with a text...

Lisa's Version: My dear former roommate Melissa Dellutro texted me one day in late October 2016 asking me if I'd be interested in being set up on a blind date with a manager at Caffe Amouri, Johnson Hsu. I had been to this quaint hipster coffee shop in Vienna a handful of times and never remembered seeing an Asian guy working there :) She met him through her friend Chieu, who is a close friend to Johnson (she did our engagement shoot pictured above! :)). Melissa shared some facts about him with me and how she felt that we'd be compatible together. When it came to dating, I was open to meeting new people and being set up on blind dates, especially if it came from a trusted friend, so I decided to give it a go. We had our first date at Yard House in Springfield and though I was a little thrown off by his bright green beanie, I was pleasantly surprised at how I enjoyed our conversations and felt so comfortable around him. I could tell he was genuine and true to himself during our time together, which I really appreciated. We spent about 3 hours eating, talking and getting to know each other's lives and spiritual journeys. It was refreshing to see that he even asked me on a second date before we parted ways. After some more dates and more time spent together, my heart felt more and more at home with Johnson. I had been praying for my future husband for so many years and started to feel a stronger assurance that I could see myself spending the rest of my life with him. Johnson's Version: What Lisa said above :) PLUS I trusted God in leading and more importantly that our story is a true testament of His Glory, grace, love, faithfulness, and impeccable timing that is all God's planning before we even knew each others names. I will end this here since I am coming to the end of this page. Yes, I only got a quarter of max allowable text here *cough cough. Luckily, I'm a man of few words and I would be honored to share more of my story of God's timing to you soon.

The Proposal

I thought we were having game night...

Johnson and I had planned a week off from work together and he introduced the idea of having an end of vacation dinner date together in Old Town Alexandria on that Friday. I remember him mentioning a game night at one of Johnson's best friends, Dan & Jenn's house that night. That Friday, he showed up to my house all dressed up...even wearing dress shoes! That gave me the hint to dress up :) He wanted to visit the memorial park to my parents' graves beforehand. Interesting thing is, Johnson's mother's memorial is also close to where my parents are buried. We prayed at the memorial park together, blessing and honoring the precious memories of our parents and trusting in the Lord for our future together. There certainly some tears shed. After all that, Johnson said, "Man, if I had a ring, I could just propose right here!" I just responded with "Uhh..." Then Johnson thought that probably wasn't a good idea :) Onward we went to dinner in Old Town. I think my spidey senses could tell that something was up. As we were walking, I tried to test him by stalling and doing some shopping, which he surprisingly let me do. We then had a nice dinner at an Italian restaurant. Afterwards, we walked to the waterfront at Old Town. We were trying to find a good place to sit down, and I started to get a little restless due to my uncomfortable shoes and the mosquitoes! :/ Johnson then started sharing about how much I meant to him. Before I knew it, he got down on one knee and was holding something sparkly. I was so shocked because I thought he would propose in the next year! Of course I said yes! At this point, I had a high suspicion that there wasn't a game night at Dan & Jenn's house from the way Johnson was rushing to get to their place. I was so touched to see our dear friends gathered there for a surprise proposal party for us! It was a memorable night for sure. I was so touched by Johnson's act of love for me and I can't wait to spend my life with him!
