Flight
These are the airports you can fly into and the times it takes to get to the location from there by car: Graz, Austria: 45 min car ride Vienna, Austria: 1.5-hour car ride Zagreb, Croatia: 2.5-hour car ride Ljubljana, Slovenia: 2.5-hour car ride Bratislava, Slovakia: 2-hour car ride Budapest, Hungary: 3-hour car ride Munich, Germany: 5-hour car ride
Train
Google Maps does not interact well with trains and public transportation in Austria. Please keep that in mind when looking up routes. Vienna public transportation: https://www.wienerlinien.at/eportal3/ Graz public transportation: https://www.holding-graz.at/graz-linien.html ÖBB is the Austrian train company. We recommend that you book tickets in advance for a flat rate — called "Sparschiene" — for a specific train as it drastically lowers the price. Flixbus is a bus company that connects different cities. Highly recommend this option as it's oftentimes cheaper than trains and works really well. Tickets need to be bought online at https://www.flixbus.at
Rental Car
The best way to get to the wedding location is by car, so we recommend a rental.
Travel Note
Check out the photo section to see what to expect in Austria! Austria: Austria has 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites and another 12 on a tentative list. This suggested tour knocks off 4 of these sites: Graz, Vienna, Salzburg and the Salzkammergut lake region. This will be a mix of sightseeing cities as well as swimming in lakes, hiking the Alps and driving through the green landscape of Austria. Graz —> Gamlitz wine region in the south of Austria/Slovenia —> head to the Salzkammergut to see the lakes in the Austrian Alps and visit the breathtaking city of Salzburg, go on hikes in the Alps, maybe go deep into the Alps to Innsbruck, before you head back to Vienna or fly out from Munich.
Travel Note
ITALY: Go to the Adriatic Sea by Trieste. It's a 3-hour car ride from Graz. Consider going through the Styrian wine country (45 mins south of Graz) which is right by the border to Slovenia. Then go through Slovenia to Trieste. —> Venice is a 4.5h car ride from Graz. —> Padua —> Verona to see the famous balcony of Romeo and Juliet —> Lago di Garda —> Innsbruck, Austrian Alps —> fly back from Munich Airport.
Travel Note
Slovenia is about 45 minutes away from Graz. Right by the border is the wine country (Südsteirische Weinstraße), which we really hope you'll visit. Go to Gamlitz in wine country —> to Maribor, Slovenia —> Zagreb, Croatia —> Plitvice Lakes National Park (you need half a day there at least) —> drive to the coast and hop onto Island Pag —> Opatija to visit one of the Habsburg-era resort towns by the Adriatic Sea —> drive over to Trieste, Italy and take it from there.
Travel Note
Budapest is a 3.5 hour car ride from Graz. From there go to Bratislava in Slovakia on your way to Prague in Czech Republic. Alternatively, Graz — Vienna — Prague are a smooth train trip. From Prague you can hop over to Dresden, Germany in under 2 hours on a bus. Fly back from Munich Airport.
Travel Note
Budapest is a 3.5 hour car ride from Graz. From there go on an epic road trip through Romania.
Travel Note
Another cool road trip would take you through parts of the Austrian Alps and the Salzburg lake region into Bavaria. Go via Munich, past Lake Constance where Germany, Austria and Switzerland and end up in beautiful Strasbourg in France, which also happens to be the seat of the European Parliament. This is the gorgeous Alsace region, the border region between Germany and France.
