Flight

Travel by plane

The International Airport of Cluj-Napoca is serviced by TAROM, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines; as well as by low-cost airlines BlueAir, Wizzair and Vueling. There are direct flights to/from Bucharest, Munich, London/Luton, Liverpool, Dublin, Rome, Venice/Treviso, Paris/Beauvais, Barcelona, Madrid and Istanbul, only to name a few. A cheaper alternative to get to Cluj-Napoca might be to fly to Budapest, Hungary and then shuttle to Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The shuttle takes six to eight hours to make the travel. Many companies travel this route and shuttles can be found from early morning till late night. Reservations have to be made in advance and shuttle prices are around 25 EUR. Guests that decide to choose this option and are in need of travel visas, beware of the international border crossing between Hungary and Romania.

Travel Note

Ground transportation

Travelers can choose between car rentals, taxis, limo service and public transportation. Liqi and I recommend taxi service to get to your lodging as well as to get around the city and the surrounding area. It is hassle free and the rates are very reasonable. The current rate of a taxi fare is about 2.25 RON/km (0.50 EUR/km). A fare from the airport to the city center (about 10 km) is around 25 RON (6 EUR) and to Vlaha (about 27 km), where Casa Barolo is located, is around 65-75 RON (15-20 EUR). However, you might be charged a higher fare to get to Vlaha because the locality is not within city limits and the taxi might add on a 'return to the city' charge. If you choose to travel by taxi, do not look for bargains. It’s not worth it. The official rates are already low. However, clearly ask the driver for the price of the fare before the ride to make sure that you’re not going to be cheated and do travel in official company taxis.
