On December 14, 2019, I attended a Christmas party hosted by our former employer. Lithe and I both worked for Vistana Signature Experience, part of Marriott, but at different locations—I was a supervisor and she was a concierge. We hadn't met in person but knew each other's names from emails, and we had mutual friends unbeknownst to us. I even supervised her friend, Kahea. As the night was winding down, Lithe arrived to pick up her friends just as I was heading downstairs to retrieve something from my car. I introduced myself to her and I greeted her with a kiss on the cheek, a gesture typical among Italians and Hawaiians. We chatted a bit about our nights before she and her friends headed to another party. Later, at the next party, Lithe excitedly recounted our brief conversation to Kahea, who encouraged her to express interest if she felt inclined. So, without hesitation Lithe asked Kahea to go with her back to the party I was finishing up at so we could talk some more. Now, believe it or not, that night I saw 2 shooting stars; one on the balcony and one when I had gone outside the first time. When Lithe came back to talk to me, I saw another shooting star and asked if she saw it too. She shared that it was the third she had seen that night as well! I know not all of us believe in superstitions, but at that moment we both felt like we were right where we were supposed to be. That it was serendipitous and that our love story was truly written in the stars.
