Lindsay: During our first week on Pepperdine’s campus, I sat in front of this loud and overly confident dude with a snapback and surfer-tanned skin. As time went on, I watched him twerk in front of our entire freshman class, walk past my team and I on the track with his surfboard and bare feet, and remain the most outspoken person in every class we shared. As fate would have it, I felt something click with this crazy guy almost immediately. On our first date he took me to Sprinkles and to see the movie Frozen, and I knew it was meant to be! Fast forward, and here we are today, with what feels like a lifetime behind us, of traveling the world together, long distance for what felt like forever, and now carpooling to work every day. Tyler is strong, intentional, loves the Lord and has become the best friend I could ask for. I could not be more excited for all that is in store, especially June 20, 2020! Tyler: Something like the second morning of freshmen orientation, "NSO", we were up early for a business division meet and greet. I remember standing in my dorm room with a perfect ocean view but most importantly, a view of the long sidewalk down from the girls dorm next door. Of course, all perfectly planned. I saw this beautiful girl, seemingly the typical SoCal sun-kissed beach-blonde type, walking down. I shouted "Dibs, That is my wife!" (Wishful thinking ay!) Then who other than that same girl happened to sit right behind me at the meet and greet. That theme held strong. Again and again, there she was, in class, the library (Yes, I went occasionally, mostly when Lindsay needed help with Econ), at a party, in the "caf". I quickly learned some valuable lessons...Tan and from the Pacific Northwest is a thing, vegetarians are people too and the prospect of dating an athlete was possible for us NARPs. From there you all know the rest. A friendship quickly grew and since then it has been lots of love, laughter and a whole lot of luck for me.
About 3 months before the planned proposal, Tyler had crafted an entire scheme to get them to Point Dume in Malibu on April 13 without causing suspicion. They both were a part of a group at Pepperdine called the Financial Literacy Initiative. The group founder (S/O to Derek Stoutland) asked for the availability of them two and other group members (S/O Sam and Courtney) in April to be interviewed by a Pepperidne alumni publication to be followed by pictures and dinner. Lindsay did not think twice about it as she is often dragged along to such things and Tyler deflected knowledge of any details. On Friday (the night before the engagement) Lindsay and Tyler were out at dinner, where out of nowhere Lindsay asked, "Are you going to propose this month? If so that is a lot sooner than I am expecting." Tyler had been emphasizing Easter Weekend in Portland, hoping to keep Lindsay off any suspicion of an engagement. He rushed to the restroom to calm himself down and came back to the table, answering all questions with "It is an unique situation." Lindsay was entirely confused, tried not to make much of it and moved on! Saturday came, Lindsay and Tyler went for a morning run, and on the way back passed by a cafe and Tyler said, "Wow that really looks like Sydney and Josh over there!" Totally forgetting Sydney had told Lindsay she was working as a further bluff to the plan. Tyler and Lindsay got ready for "Financial Literacy Pictures" and headed to Point Dume. They parked at the very bottom of the point and had to hike quite a ways up. Tyler made his speech on the walk up and Lindsay figured out they were not there for a Pepperdine function. On a deck, overlooking the ocean with cotton candy skies in the background, Tyler got on one knee and asked Lindsay for his hand in marriage, and of course she said "Yes!" They were then greeted by friends hiding in the bushes and a surprise dinner in Malibu with family and friends to follow. It was the absolute perfect day!
