Car rental in the city of Tulum is notorious for price gouging. Cancun the price is very reasonable. Driving a rental within the city center is doable, but if you have never driven in a similar country it may be intimidating. However, within the hotel zone traffic is quite congested with very limited parking. There everything is also within walking distance so a car may be more of a hassle. Uber / Lyft are not available in Tulum, but taxis are abundant. But be aware of price gouging there as well.

daytrip.com is a good option to book a private shuttle to and from the airport. Tulum's airport is quite new and transportation there is still improving. From personal experience, we would also discourage renting a car from Tulum airport or city center as there is notorious price gouging Cancun airport car rental is much better than Tulum's. While a private shuttle is still recommended, renting a car is an option. However, parking - and driving - in the hotel zone is not very easy and will cost Be sure to book your shuttles in advance!!

Cancun is the bigger airport with more direct flights, and flights all together. It is approx 90min from Tulum. Car rental is inexpensive here if you wish to rent one, relative to Tulum. There is also an option of Viamex shuttle to get from the airport to Tulum. Details to come...

Tulum airport is brand new about ~40min from the center of Tulum. It is smaller but growing, so will have less flights and direct flights may also be less common. but it is growing. As of 2023, the transportation and car rental services were difficult here. Traveling at the same time as others can make for an easy shuttle from the airport to the hotels
