University Library Cafe
This was where we had our first "real" date, as the back booth of this restaurant/bar is where we talked and decided to be in an official relationship together. This is our regular Sunday brunch spot, and go-to place for a night cap.
Linn's Super Market
We started dating in the fall and made it our mission to go to all the haunted houses in the area. This is our favorite and actually was one of our first dates. It's attached to a real supermarket. We will warn you, you do have to crawl through the entrance, but this spot is definitely worth it if you are a Halloween fan.
Wills Family Orchard
This is one of our favorite fall date spots, located 20 minutes outside of Des Moines. You can go apple or pumpkin picking and enjoy their selection of apple cider donuts, wines, and other treats. There is a corn maze you can walk through and barn animals you can pet.
Black Sheep
This is our favorite bar in Des Moines. They typically have a live vinyl DJ and they have the best margaritas in town.
High Trestle Trail Bridge
This is Lillian's favorite spot in her hometown, about 30 minutes from Des Moines. To fully appreciate this spot, go at night to see the lights!
Ledges State Park
This is a beautiful nature park in Lillian's hometown that is especially gorgeous in the fall. You can hike, walk along the creek, and go camping. You can explore the sandstone ledges and caves. It is a fairly easy, low-stress hike and perfect for a picnic. If you want to start a fire for any reason, please check burn ordinances at that time and don't start them in caves, or risk a fine (learned that lesson the hard way).
Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad
Ride the train for lunch or dinner. If you are feeling brave and want a gorgeous view of Iowa fall, sign up to pedal on the motorcar
Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
This spot is beautiful to visit and offers many community events you can enjoy as well.
Des Moines Art Center
The Art Center has a ton of unique exhibits you can walk through and view, as well as frequent events. Admission is free.
East Village
East Village is the place to go for local shopping, eating, and drinking.
Confluence Brewing Company
Enjoy local craft beer.
Big Grove Brewery & Taproom
Enjoy local craft beer and food.
Blue Sushi Sake Grill
Blue is a Godzilla themed sushi and cocktail place downtown, surrounded by a lot of beautiful historic buildings and a great view of the Capitol. This is one of our favorite date spots. They offer a lot of vegetarian and vegan options.
Mars Cafe
This is Lillian's favorite coffee shop. One of her favorite seasonal drinks this time of year is the Libra.
Daisy Chain Coffee
This is Seth's favorite coffee shop in town, located in East Village near tons of places for eating and shopping. His favorite drink here is the cafe miel.
Purveyor
This is one of Seth's favorite restaurants, located in East Village. They have a great wine selection as well as food.
