How We Met

From Coworkers to Couple

Sarah and Leslie first met when Sarah was interviewing for a position at SUNY Oneonta. They kept to themselves when Sarah first started, but in time became best friends who complimented each other well. Life moves fast when you're having fun! A famous saying goes good things take time great things come all at once. Before they knew it, Sarah was moving on to a job at Binghamton and the two found themselves in a long distance relationship, which continued to grow.

Deciding on a Direction

Distance makes the heart grow fonder

Sarah moved an hour away to Binghamton for the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year. In December 2019, Leslie received a job offer in Maryland, it was a step up in her career and had to go. In January 2020, Leslie relocated, leaving them 3 hours apart. Little did we know what would unfold 6 weeks after Leslie moved. What we all thought would be a short "two week pause" turned into a pandemic. With job uncertainty, they decided to not reunite, but to stay in their current roles to ensure positions. Fast forward to the summer of 2021 and the distance was too much. Sarah's summer off (due to a 10-month position) turned into a decision to leave New York and relocate Maryland. The rest is history!

The Proposal Weekend

We BOTH said YES

They each wanted to have their special day and make their childhood dreams of a proposal come true. The couple agreed that it was not an engagement until they each had made their proposal. The only parameter ? Leslie did not want to be proposed to in April. After carefully selecting a weekend (Saturday April 30 & Sunday May 1), they each got to work on the details of the others' proposal. Leslie planned a beautiful day with all of Sarah's favorite things. They headed to the Eastern Shore and while the historical tour in Chestertown did not work out, they decided to explore the local town, and then went to a private beach with the calming waves in the background to share an intimate moment and ask the question. Then (in order to not spill the news!) Leslie and Sarah went to the Sox game since they were in town! Unfortunately, they couldn't pull off the win but the secret stayed safe! The next day it was Sarah's turn to give Leslie her perfect proposal. The day began at the Rawlings Conservatory where Leslie could enjoy beautiful flowers. Next door was the Zoo where halfway through the visit it began to pour. What Leslie did not know was Sarah had a picnic planned for her complete with notes about the symbolism of each thing Sarah packed. Well they say it rains on your wedding day it's good luck, but what about proposals? They ended up going home early, clearing everything from the living room, making a fire, and having a home picnic in front of the fireplace where the proposal was made. Both days were perfectly us, not as expected, but looking back on it, just perfect for us.

Significance of the Venue

Love is a River

When they began to discuss their dream locations, a small town feel was important to Leslie while Sarah had always dreamed of a waterfront view for her special day. The couple spent time researching and had visited Havre de Grace on a whim in the Summer of 2020. They recalled their roots as a couple in Central New York, and their trips to Cooperstown, where the North Branch of the Susquehanna River begins. Their journey has carried them along various points of the river and many memories have been made. As they begin this new adventure, they could not imagine a more perfect place - where the Susquehanna River empties into the Chesapeake and continues its journey, a symbolism of their new union and life together.
