Explore this amazing city and super kind humans that live there. Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so the store fronts haven't changed since their inceptions with the exceptions of little signs. Imagine a McDonald's looking no different from the outside than a 4th generation cafe or restaurant. Ladies making fresh masa and tortillas all day long! There are so many awesome ruins and historic sites, check the Google Maps we shared, you can knock most of them out in a day.
One of the most highly active in the world. Located near Antigua, it's known for its frequent, sometimes violent eruptions, making it one of the world's most active volcanoes. You can glam this and get driven up, have sherpas carry stuff and help you (6-8 hours), a half day hike (12-14 hours), or a sleepover hike where you can catch the volcano erupting in darkness (18+ hours). We opted for the half day one, be prepared for a challenge. There are a lot of loose volcanic rocks and pretty steep climbs. It also started pouring rain on us, which sucked balls, but despite the bloody toes (we did not bring the right shoes, because we were not warned - CHRIS!!!) and being miserable at times, this was an unforgettable experience. The over night one, you sleep in mini cabins with mattresses on the ground - not glamorous, but plenty good. If you have the time and are up for an adventure, this would be the way to go and in hindsight, what we would have chosen. WE HAVE FAITH IN YOU!
If you love coffee, this is a must. Heck, I don't even drink coffee (unless it's in a cocktail) and I really enjoyed it. This truly is from Bean to Brew. You start by touring the farm where you gain indepth knowledge of the entire process, from planting to harvesting. Once the farm tour is finished, you come back down and learn how to choose the right beans, roast them, hand grind down them down, and brew up a fresh cup of coffee! A home cooked meal is included and they even made an entire vegan pot for Danielle. There are a lot of farms to choose from, so we poked around and found a great one. De La Gente was closed when we were there, but they are known to be the best cooperative which gives back to the community.
A stunning volcanic lake in Guatemala's southwestern highlands, is known for its picturesque beauty, Mayan villages, and surrounding volcanoes. The lake is surrounded by three volcanoes: Atitlán, Tolimán, and San Pedro. A great way to spend 24 hours. Depending on how far around the lake you are going, you can get to the area in about 1.5 hours by car with the town of Panajachel being the most developed. There are the typical things to do on the water - kayaking, paddleboarding, etc. Where this area shines are the cultural experiences including weaving demonstrations. We headed out of Antigua in the morning, stayed one night, and came back the next day after lunch. Pro Tip : If you go swimming like we did (which was really fun), try not to accidentally gulp a giant mouthful of lake water (some of the town drains into the lake). A day later I was a dual fountain coming out of my head and the other end for a good 24 hours. Not the best way to spend your time on vacation.
On the way to Antigua from Guatemala City (about an hour drive) - Hobbitenango is an eco-friendly, hobbit-themed amusement park and hotel located in Antigua, Guatemala. It's known for its hobbit-style houses, restaurants, bars, and views of the surrounding volcanoes. The park also features various activities like archery, axe-throwing, a huge hand overlooking the valley, and a giant swing. If you have the time, you can stay on this insane reserve with a minimum 2 night stay. It's really fun, has a live Gandalf walking around, and plenty of locals came to visit. For any JRR Tolkein fan, this is a must. If you just want a really cool experience, you can't go wrong!
