FAQs

Question

What airport should I fly into?

Answer

Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole

Question

When should I arrive in Kona?

Answer

We recommend arriving a few days before the wedding if you can (or as early as you’d like). We’ll be flying out shortly after the wedding, so most of our time with guests will be beforehand. We’d love to spend as much time as possible with everyone who is traveling in, and there’s so much to see and do if you have the time. It’s truly a beautiful place to experience!

Question

Where can I rent a car?

Answer

Rental cars are available at the airport, but it’s a good idea to book one in advance through Turo or another rental website!

Question

What is driving like in Hawaii?

Answer

Driving in Hawaii is way more relaxed than in big mainland cities. People aren’t aggressive, and honking is usually seen as pretty rude (unless it’s a quick, friendly beep). Most drivers will let you merge or pull out, and it’s nice to give a little wave or a shaka to say thanks. Overall, no one’s really in a rush; people drive slower and are pretty laid-back about timing.

Question

What should I pack?

Answer

Pack lightweight clothes like t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, and sundresses, along with at least two swimsuits. Bring a light jacket for cooler evenings. For shoes, pack sandals or flip-flops, plus comfortable walking/tennis shoes if you plan to do any hiking. Don’t forget sun protection like reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Bring a reusable water bottle and a beach/tote bag. Other non-essential items include snorkeling gear, a small backpack for excursions, and a portable phone charger. Don't forget essentials like a driver's license, medications, and a phone or camera.

Question

What is the venue called?

Answer

Kona Outrigger Resort & Spa is the name of the Hotel and our wedding ceremony will be at the Bayside Lawn.

Question

Is the event outdoors?

Answer

Yes, the event is on the Bayside Lawn, a grassy area with a little chapel right next to the ocean. We will be outside for the whole wedding, weather permitting!

Question

Where should I park?

Answer

The hotel has a large parking lot that they've let our wedding guests park in for free on the day of the wedding!

Question

Is the ceremony and reception at the same location?

Answer

Yes, the ceremony will be at the Bawside Lawn, and we will then walk over to the Bayview Grounds for the reception on the same property.

Question

Should I bring a physical gift or a card?

Answer

Cards are greatly appreciated, or you’re welcome to purchase a gift from our registry, which will be shipped directly to our apartment in Iowa. Since we’ll be traveling back with limited space, we can only bring cards with us.

Question

What is Hawaiian time?

Answer

“Hawaiian time” is a local way of describing a more relaxed approach to time and schedules. It means people will be late and tend to move at a slower, more easygoing pace and aren’t as focused on being exactly on the minute. Things may start a little later than planned, and that’s generally just part of the culture.
