We met while studying abroad in Accra, Ghana in 2011. Well, technically, we met at the airport in Washington D.C. en route to study abroad. We were both attending San Francisco State (Go, Gators!) and our group flight from San Francisco to Accra connected in D.C. In D.C., we sat next to each other at the gate. Leila complimented Erik's purple Vans, and Erik complimented Leila's tattoo. From there, we shared many conversations where we argued about politics and spirituality, optimism vs. cynicism, and the existence of karma. We rode motorcycles and climbed mountains and got malaria. And so, even though after our year abroad we went our separate ways, both living in different cities and countries for many years before reconnecting, we would come back to each other with trust, connection, and love. One day, in 2019, Erik decided to wish Leila a happy birthday on her Facebook wall. That comment sparked a conversation, which led to a phone call, which led to many, longer, phone calls. Eventually, Erik would leave Oakland and move in with Leila in Bloomington, Indiana, where she was attending grad school (no love without sacrifice!), and the rest is history. A world without Meta is a world without our relationship, so we really have Big Tech to thank for our courtship.
