We wish our welcome drinks were here. The outdoor bar, Hank's Hair of the Dog Saloon, has some of the best live music in Key West and is accompanied by Garbo's Taco Truck on site, which cooks delicious and fresh stuffed tacos.
Originally constructed in 1890 as naval officers' housing, the building gained prominence when President Harry S. Truman began using it as his winter White House in 1946. Changing technology allowed the President to communicate with multiple political or world leaders at one time and he could summon staff to Key West for a meeting in three hours' flight from Washington. Truman spent 175 days of his presidency here, where he managed crucial aspects of U.S. governance, including the Marshall Plan and the Truman Doctrine. The house is not only notable for its association with Truman but also for its use by other presidents such as Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. The area here is nice to walk around in.
