A fairly quick 25 minute drive from downtown Buena Vista, Cottonwood Pass is one of Matt's favorite places in Colorado. The paved road offers a relatively easy drive to the 11,000+ ft pass, with wide switch backs. At the top you are greeted with a parking lot and some of the best views in the state. The pass is situated on the Continental Divide, with the east side offering beautiful views of your drive and a narrow mountain pass, while the west side offers a stunning vista of the Continental Divide ranging stretching to the northwest and Taylor Park Reservoir to the west. The road should be open by June but expect there to be some snow on top still.
This foot bridge spanning the Royal Gorge in Canon City may be 90 mins away from BV but it is worth the trip. Besides the jaw dropping views, there are also zip lines, a gondola, and a skycoaster. Check ticket prices for general admission to the bridge and additional costs for the other attractions.
Pikes Peak is where Matt proposed! The entrance to the Pikes Peak Highway is about 90 minutes from Buena Vista. A paved road leads to the summit of the 14,000+ ft peak, complete with a visitor center and scenic viewing opportunities. The winding drive is not for the faint of heart, but the views at the summit are worth it. The drive from the entrance of the highway to the top will take about an hour each way so plan accordingly.
