Should I rent a car?

Answer

A car may make your life easier if you are planning on exploring more of LA or SoCal, but if you are staying in the Santa Monica area, ubers will be just fine and will save you any protection headache of parking.

What do we do the 2.5 hours between the wedding and reception?

Answer

Our wedding is at St. Timothy's Catholic church, 5 miles from the reception venue, Hotel Casa del Mar. As traffic can be a concern, the time between wedding ceremony and reception is intended to give everyone ample time to get to Santa Monica (even freshen up at your hotel if you are nearby). Once back in Santa Monica, the venue is happy to have people at their hotel bar (or their sister hotel, Shutters), until the wedding cocktail hour starts at 5:30pm. More details closer to date.
