If you're driving from the L.A. area, this is an hour-each-way detour from Big Pine but it's absolutely worth the extra planning if the road is still open (you'll climb 6,000 feet to the top, so check for road closures before planning the excursion).
Red Hill’s pumice and lava rock terrain (and distinctive hue) feel miles away from anywhere familiar. With the snow-dusted Sierra as a backdrop, this pit stop might just become a must-stop. Red Hill is visible from HWY 395 as you head north. Watch for signs to Fossil Falls and turn right on Cinder Road.
Even passenger vehicles can handle (most) of these dirt roads to explore the Alabama Hills. From Whitney Portal Road in Long Pine, head east until the rock formations resemble cartoon blobs, then set aside an hour or two for exploring. One of our favorite loops is the Mobius Arch trail, the namesake of which perfectly frames Mt. Whitney in its granite whorl.
