Along the Way

The Wedding Website of Laurel Dailey and Mikey Cole
If you're staying an extra day, or driving up from the L.A.-area, here are a few of our favorite stops along the way. We'd recommend selecting at least one of these and carving out at least an extra hour or two from your drive.
Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest

Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest

White Mountain Road, Bishop, CA 93514
, (760) 873-2400

If you're driving from the L.A. area, this is an hour-each-way detour from Big Pine but it's absolutely worth the extra planning if the road is still open (you'll climb 6,000 feet to the top, so check for road closures before planning the excursion).

Travertine Hot Springs

Travertine Hot Springs

Bridgeport, CA 93517

The area is filled with hot springs, and Travertine is the most accessible one. Head there early if you hope to have a tub to yourself.

Hot Creek Geological Site

Hot Creek Geological Site

Hot Creek Hatchery Road, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546

A little bit of Yellowstone right here in California.

Red Hill at Fossil Falls

Red Hill at Fossil Falls

CA

Red Hill’s pumice and lava rock terrain (and distinctive hue) feel miles away from anywhere familiar. With the snow-dusted Sierra as a backdrop, this pit stop might just become a must-stop. Red Hill is visible from HWY 395 as you head north. Watch for signs to Fossil Falls and turn right on Cinder Road.

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

U.S. 395, Lee Vining, CA 93541
, (760) 647-6331

Unearthly formations rise out of this salinic, ancient lake. A visit there is worthwhile at any time of the day.

Convict Lake

Convict Lake

CA 93546

A glittering lake nestled at the base of Mount Morrison, and an excellent place to see fall foliage.

Alabama Hills Movie Road

Alabama Hills Movie Road

Movie Flat Road, Lone Pine, CA 93545

Even passenger vehicles can handle (most) of these dirt roads to explore the Alabama Hills. From Whitney Portal Road in Long Pine, head east until the rock formations resemble cartoon blobs, then set aside an hour or two for exploring. One of our favorite loops is the Mobius Arch trail, the namesake of which perfectly frames Mt. Whitney in its granite whorl.

Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery

Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery

111 West Post Street, Lone Pine, CA 93545
, (760) 876-4675

The portions are gargantuan but you'll want to save room for a slice of their signature pie.

For all the days along the way
