Go with an open mind. Talk to your taxi drivers, talk to locals, they love to engage with you. Colombia has so much more to offer than what the history or the news tells you. Especially Pergamino coffee (Laura buys a questionable amount of bags when she is in Colombia and only drinks this coffee in the US, sorry Dunkin lovers). Pergamino coffee is conveniently located at the lobby of wake hotel and has other popular locations.
At markets and with street vendors, mild negotiation is normal and expected; not in stores/restaurants. Double check prices by asking for the Spanish version of the menu/price list to confirm you aren't getting the "gringo" prices.
Casual but neat. Colombians dress a notch sharper day-to-day than typical US casual; beachwear stays at the beach. Pants are the norm, avoid flashy outfits and expensive jewelry. No need to draw attention.
Medellin has two seasons. Rainy and Dry. They don't follow a regular calendar. Prepare for mid-70's and we will notify you closer to the date if regular rainfall is expected.
