A Sunday morning hot yoga class at 108 Yoga, Medellín, Colombia. Laura was waiting for her friend Dani, but Dani got stuck in traffic and couldn't make it in time. So Laura moved the mat from the spot she'd saved, leaving the space next to her empty. And Tata, the teacher, began. That day, the intention was about opening your heart so new people can walk in. Perhaps opening yourself to the world and its new possibilities. The intention was barely set, and we're not exaggerating, when Laura opened her eyes and found Will had rolled out his mat right next to hers. Will had been living in Medellín for a couple of months, on his fourth trip to Colombia. He was working remotely, living with Andrew, Josh, and Nick after a stint in Bali. Will was the one who'd convinced them to do three months in Medellín, sold on the time zone, the food, and the people. He was training hard for a jiujitsu tournament, completely dialed in, and that week he was hosting Jose, now our dear friend and officiant, playing tour guide through a city he already knew by heart. The class itself was intense, an hour and a half long, and Laura and Will found themselves in what was arguably the hottest corner of the room ;) After the final savasana, they both sat there for a moment, quiet. Laura was thinking about her master's thesis and the onsite corporate job she'd wanted to quit for a while; Will was talking with Jose. Will was holding onto the spray bottle to clean his mat, and for some reason he just wouldn't put it down. So Laura walked over and asked, "Are you done with that?" He turned around with a huge smile and said, "You speak English! How did you know I speak English?" She looked at him incredulously. They both laughed. That was it. For the next hour they sat in the sala and talked about everything. Will asked for restaurant recommendations, walks, things to do — playing the new-in-town card for all it was worth. Laura, being very Laura, pulled up her full list, "Medellín Cool Hunting" (now curated by both of us, and up on this website too). He asked if she'd share it, asked which was her favorite restaurant... and then asked, "When can I take you there?" They haven't stopped since. Talking, laughing, yoga classes, new restaurants, hikes, books, and adventures all over the world: from a Madrid trip whose main purpose was to visit Juanis, One Laura's best friends, but ended up extending a few days so Will could surprise her in Barcelona and whisk her away to Madrid for a few days of sightseeing. From the Prado museum, to trying stingray for the first time, to Laura seeing snow for the first time, to backcountry skiing a volcano in Japan, asados in Colombia with family, hikes in Vermont, beach days, and Sauna Sundays on Cape Cod. Will and Laura haven't stopped exploring the world and challenging the status quo along the way. And now, we get to come back to Medellín, the city where it all began, to say "I do."
