One may wonder how a California native living in the Commonwealth of Virginia found a girl hailing from the farmlands of North Central Ohio. A love story with a 21st century flair, Vince found Laura on the social media network Instagram. Their first correspondence happened on a lazy spring Sunday when the future couple by happenstance were both watching the same four-hour WWII documentary on the History Channel. A few messages back in forth that day in Laura’s comment section led to Facebook messages, texts and phone calls soon after. Within six weeks, Vince made his first journey to visit Laura in her hometown of Bucyrus, Ohio. The rest is history!
When Laura booked a trip to Virginia for Vince’s birthday weekend, she expressed a desire to make a return visit to Monticello. The couple first toured Thomas Jefferson’s home together in June 2016 and enjoyed many hours together on the historic grounds. The perfect scene was set to surprise Laura with a proposal. After the 40-minute house tour Vince was able to usher Laura toward the back lawn to see the famous view that appears on the back of the nickel. Vince loves to take pictures, so nothing seemed amiss to Laura when he was posing her with the house behind her. Then as a light rain blanketed the region, Vince took both of Laura’s hands as they stood under an umbrella. After a few sentences of Vince’s heartfelt sentiments, Laura’s eyes lit up with excitement as they told the world she knew what was coming next. Vince then went to one knee and pulled a ring box from his pocket and asked Laura if she would please be his wife. Laura responded with a “Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes!” Vince’s coworker and photographer Matt Riley was able to capture the epic proposal picture that has made its rounds across social media.
