Flight
Delta, Lufthansa, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, United, Austrian, and Air France all offer direct flights from New York City to Edinburgh. For a potentially cheaper flight, try flying to a larger flight hub like London or Dublin and take a cheap connecting flight on Ryanair or Easy Jet (book separately).
Train
If you're connecting to Edinburgh from London and have some time to spare, taking the train up the coast to Scotland is a good way to get acquainted with the countryside. The seats are also more comfortable than they are on Ryanair. Prices vary by time of day/year as well as the number of stops.
