After swiping right, Jonathon and Laura met at Buffa’s in the French Quarter for their first date. They talked about music, comedy, spirituality, and the way they saw the world. Laura said, “I like the way you think.” They both knew right away there was a spark, the conversation flowed, and so did the smiles. As they continued dating they started spending all their time together and slowly opened up to each other, showing their creative sides and connecting over their deep love of music. There was harmony in more ways than one.
It’s August 29, 2021, category 4 Hurricane Ida is racing towards New Orleans. Jonathon and Laura stayed in their Metairie home and had barely slept as they prepped for the incoming storm. Laura was running around anxiously cleaning and making lists, while Jonathon was blasting Bon Jovi’s “It’s My Life” and playing air guitar with one of Bobo’s stuffed fish toys. We all cope differently. As the storm was coming in, Jonathon told Laura that she should change clothes because they were going to the neighbor’s house for a hurricane party. Laura, being from Louisiana, said, “What do you mean, into different hurricane clothes?” “…Sure,” he said. So she annoyingly put on a slightly nicer pair of sweatpants and a new T-shirt and went to the porch to find Jonathon all dressed up, tears in his eyes, porch furniture secured, and enjoying the sudden realization dawning on Laura’s face. As he kneeled in the yard as the first gusts of the hurricane blew in and it started to rain, he said: “No volcano, tornado, earthquake or hurricane could keep me from loving you.” She said yes.
