West Africans and most Caribbean passport holders do not need a visa to enter Ghana. US passport holders must have a visa to enter Ghana.
US passport holders who plan to only visit Ghana during this trip, and have no plans of returning to Ghana in the next five years, you can apply for a single entry visa ($90). For US passport holders who plan to visit Ghana and another country, with transit back to Ghana before returning to the US, or for those who may visit Ghana again in the next five years, please apply for a multi-entry visa ($130) - it is well worth it! Visas are being processed online through the following websites: https://ghanaconsulatenewyork.org/ (Ghana New York Consulate) https://ghanaembassydc.org (Ghana Embassy, Washington D.C.)
Those applying for a single entry visa, you can apply 20 days before your date of travel - the visa will grant you a three (3) month grace period to begin/conclude your travel. Once in Ghana, you will be granted a 30 day stay. Those applying for a multiple entry visa, you can apply now, or not less than 30 days before your date of travel - the visa will grant you up to 5 years clearance to travel to and through Ghana - years of clearance cannot exceed the date your passport expires. Once in Ghana, you will be granted a 30-60 day stay each time.
In order to apply for a visa to Ghana, you must have proof of yellow fever vaccination. Kindly complete this as soon as possible - this month would be ideal. Most general practitioners are able to give this for free with prior notice. The immunity lasts 10 years, and will grant you medical clearance to travel throughout Africa. You cannot apply for a visa to Ghana without proof of yellow fever vaccination (yellow fever card); hence obtaining your yellow fever vaccine is the first step of the visa process. Please contact your medical provider to inquire about locations where this can be completed.
Ghana is a cash dominant society. Visa cards are accepted at select locations, however, cash is often the only method of payment available. You can exchange money at your bank prior to your departure, or you can exchange money upon your arrival in Ghana.Exchanging at the airport is convenient, but the rate may not be the best. Banks and foreign exchange bureaus are available throughout the city. We recommend the exchange bureau at Marina Shopping Mall; it is close to the airport with good rates (close drive; it is not walking distance). If you are coming with cash, please come with 100 USD notes - new bills with the blue strip. Older notes are not accepted at many exchange places as they are easier to counterfeit.
All RSVPs should be received by July 30, 2022.
