William Randolph Hearst started to build a fabulous estate on his ranchland overlooking the village of San Simeon in 1919. He called the estate "La Cuesta Encantada" - Spanish for The Enchanted Hill. By 1947, the hilltop complex included a twin-towered main building, three sumptuous guesthouses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains, and pools. The Hearst Monument is 15 miles south, across from the old town of San Simeon. For information on the castle, and to reserve tickets, visit the Hearst Castle website.
In January 2013, The Pacific Coast Wine Trail was established to promote wine tasting along Northern San Luis Obispo County coast. Many visitors stay in Cambria to enjoy the coastal climate but then drive inland 30 miles to the heat of Paso Robles to taste wine. The course of the trail gives wine aficionados the opportunity to remain on the coast and enjoy a full day of tasting from unique local wineries in our cool climate. The trail not only offers premium, award winning wines, but also the opportunity to discover boutique wineries off the beaten path and, on most occasions, the chance to learn about the wines directly from the winemaker or owner.
The elephant seal colony at Point Piedras Blancas, 7.7 miles north of San Simeon, California has experienced phenomenal growth in less than 30 years. Since the first pup was born in February, 1992, the colony has grown to an estimated 25,000 elephant seals along an 8+-mile stretch of coastline. Friends of the Elephant Seal Docents are at the viewing areas to answer questions and help visitors get the most from their viewing experience. Public safety and respect for the seals are prime considerations. The San Simeon-based Visitor Center and Gift Shop provides both educational exhibits and unique elephant seal-themed gifts and souvenirs.
