Delaney and Matt first crossed paths in the wonderfully chaotic pre-pandemic year of 2019. Matt was working at the Newport Mansions, doing his best to avoid tripping over velvet ropes, while Delaney was an intern—casually helping history come alive and unintentionally stealing Matt’s heart from across the visitor center. Matt, in classic fashion, kept inventing increasingly flimsy reasons to wander over and chat. (“Need help… with that brochure?”) But alas, the timing wasn’t right—and he eventually ran out of excuses. We went our separate ways, leaving behind only memories of awkward small talk and unspoken interest. Then, in late 2021, fate—or more accurately, internet algorithms—stepped in. We reconnected online, realized we still remembered each other (yes, even the weird museum flirting), and picked up right where we left off. A few conversations later, we found ourselves in something real. By January 2022, we’d officially leveled up to boyfriend-and-girlfriend status—a title Matt embraced with great enthusiasm, and which Delaney awarded only after a careful review of his resume (not kidding!) and qualifications. Things moved quickly after that: we moved in together in Newport just a few months later. We also spent a couple years working side-by-side at the Newport Historical Society, which only confirmed what we already suspected: we make a pretty great team. These days, we spend our time collecting whisky and gin, grilling up hot dogs with friends in our backyard, and trying keep our tuxedo cat, Betty from obtaining the nuclear codes. Fast forward to June 17, 2025—the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill—when we got engaged like the history nerds we are: with laughter, tears, and just a touch of Revolutionary fervor. Because nothing says “romance” quite like, “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes.”
