John Nic and Laney first met September '23, on a hiking trip with their churches Young Adult ministry to Cummins Falls, where Laney took quite the spill trying to climb the falls. After being left behind by the rest of the group because she couldn't keep up, John Nic stayed behind to help her back up to the top of the hike. At the time neither of them knew the others name, and they went on not even knowing they went to the same church for another six months, and began dating May '24. After nine months had passed since their long forgotten hiking trip, Laney and John Nic took a trip to Kentucky Lake with his family. While floating in secluded bay, Laney kept finding tiny seashells she wanted to take home with her. With no pockets of her own she handed each one off to John Nic to tuck away in his swim trunks. Soon they boarded back on the boat and John Nic unloaded his overstuffed pockets to find a black scrunchie buried beneath all of the shells. "Where'd you get that?" Laney asked. "It's yours!" John Nic quickly defended. "It most definitely is not mine. I stopped wearing scrunchies months ago." "I promise it's your scrunchie! Hear me out!" It turned out the swim trunks that he wore that day out on the lake happened to be the same pair he had worn nine months before, when Laney's scrunchie had come out of her hair as she dived into the water at Cummins Falls. John Nic had grabbed it and attempted to hand it back to Laney, who was much more focused on not slipping and falling, she told him to just toss it back in the water because she couldn't take it from him. Instead he had slipped the scrunchie in his pocket to give back to her later, but after her fall, the scrunchie had been completely forgotten.
