How We Met

It all started at Cliff Bell's... or did it?

An interesting part of the Molly and Steve story is Facebook's role in how they met. Molly generally opposes entering into the virtual world of socializing and has never even created a Facebook profile. Steve, no Facebook fanatic himself, did have a profile and used it to keep in touch with friends and loved ones. Yet somehow these two lovebirds may never have been able to get together without the help of the social media giant. One day while Steve was living in Ann Arbor he went to a Sigur Ros concert at the Meadowbrook Ampitheater in Rochester, MI with his friends Brad Nitschke and Jason and Michelle Golba. As is often the case on social media, a picture taken at the show was posted and the participants tagged. Fast forward a few months when Steve moved to Detroit. This is where it gets interesting, but first let's introduce the characters invovled. Brad Nitschke was never much of a Facebook advocate himself. In fact, it is commonly understood that his Facebook profile was established by his friends as a joke. Nevertheless, the profile existed. Brad also happened to be old friends with a self-proclaimed matchmaker named Jessica Farley, formerly of the Siekierski clan. Jessica (who also has a Facebook Account) and Steve attended Bowling Green State University (BG) at the same time, where they knew each other and had several mutual friends. (Interestingly, they both grew up in Waterville, OH but did not meet until living in BG.) While Jessica was crushing her college curriculum, she also met the one and only Jamie Farley; they eventually married and moved to Metro Detroit. Jamie and Steve knew each other back when they were both Falcons too. They even lived in the same four-unit apartment building on Wooster Street. Long after the undergraduate days had passed everyone by, Jamie and Molly serendipitously (it turns out) found themselves working together in Detroit. They became friends, naturally so did Molly and the now Jessica Farley. So ... Facebook hater Brad Nitschke and Facebook liker Jessica (Sierkierski) Farley must have been Facebook friends simply because they had known each other for a long time. When Michelle Golba tagged Brad Nitschke in the Sigur Ros concert photo she unknowingly set a new love story in motion. See, Jessica could view the photo because of her Facebook friendship with Brad. Steve was also tagged, which alerted Jessica to his close proximity to her and Jamie in Detroit. Since she hadn't seen him in fifteen or so years she fortuitously decided to reach out and see how he was doing. Steve and Jessica, responsible adults that they are, harnessed the power of Facebook for good. They had no problem exchanging greetings, communicating amicably, and booking a time to see each other's actual face. Thus, a meeting was set to take advantage of the Happy Hour at Cliff Bell's, a bee-boppin' jazz bar in downtown Detroit. On a weekday after work, Steve walked from his Woodridge apartment and arrived at Cliff Bell's, underdressed. Jessica, ulterior motive fully in mind, brought along an unsuspecting friend named Molly. They all had a lovely time. After describing the deliciousness of a Bucharest Shawarma, Molly and Steve left Cliff Bell's for the Bucharest Grill because he was hungry (big surprise). They watched the Red Wings, who had already clinched a playoff spot, and each ranked The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin in their preferred order. Later that evening, they even ended up reading the dictionary together. The rest is history, but you won't find it on Facebook... Well, some of it you can.
