Things You Should Know

You've got questions!? We've got answers. But hey, if we haven't answered yours, feel free to contact us. 917-972-6699
Question

When should I arrive to Vancouver?

Answer

No later than Friday at 4PM Vancouver local time (PST). The first event for out-of-towners is on Friday evening at 6PM. Vancouver is 3 hours behind New York. Therefore, you may be able to fly in that day and still make the Shabbat welcome. However, for your own comfort and convenience, we recommend flying in on the Thursday to give you time to settle in. This also gives you time to explore a bit on Friday!

Question

When should I depart Vancouver?

Answer

No earlier than Monday morning. The reception is Sunday evening atop Grouse.

Question

How long is the flight from New York?

Answer

A nonstop flight is 5-6 hours. An itinerary with a stopover should not exceed 10 hours, and can often be done in 7 or 8 hours.

Question

How long is the drive between Beth Israel Synagogue and Grouse Mountain

Answer

45 minutes to an hour, depending on the traffic. This drive will take you through downtown, Stanley Park, and over the iconic Lions Gate Bridge before climbing up to the base of Grouse.

Question

What is the parking situation at Grouse Mountain?

Answer

Grouse Mountain has ample parking lots around the Skyride. We recommend parking in lots A, B, and C as they are closest to the Guest Services counter where you pick up your ticket to go up the Skyride. If you see the Starbucks, you're in the right place! Parking is $10.00 per vehicle.

Question

Is it true you live in igloos and trudge through the snow all year?

Answer

Wrong part of Canada my friend. Contrary to some people's beliefs, Vancouver is known for its mild winters with occasional rainfall and crystal clear air - similar to Seattle. In fact, New York is colder in the winter than Vancouver. In February, temperatures are typically in the mid 40s (Fahrenheit). Bring a sweater and coat. The top of Grouse Mountain will likely be a bit colder and have snow on the ground, so plan accordingly.

Question

What is the dress code?

Answer

For Friday and Saturday night, smart casual. Come comfortable and ready for a good time. For the wedding on Sunday, this is a formal affair.

Question

Ok cool, but aren't we on top of a ski mountain?

Answer

True! But not to worry. When you arrive at Grouse Mountain, you immediately board the gondola. When exiting at the top, the gondola leads straight into the lodge and restaurant. That being said, you are welcome to walk around and explore the mountain with all of its fun attractions available free of charge. Please plan accordingly.

Question

So what are these complimentary Grouse Mountain activities you mentioned?

Answer

We are so glad you asked. As guests of the wedding, you are receiving complimentary Skyride passes from Grouse that will whisk you up to the Peak of Vancouver. At the top you will find an array of fun winter activities available to you complimentary with your ticket. These include but are not limited to an ice skating rink and stunning light walk. We also encourage guests to explore the chalet where you will find the Grouse Mountain gift shop and various patios with views looking over the entire city. Your pass also entitles you to a 20% discount in the three gift shops! For a full list of activities, please visit: https://www.grousemountain.com/current_conditions#activities-guide

Question

I am Shomer Shabbat. Is the Friday dinner walking distance?

Answer

If staying in downtown, then unfortunately not. The dinner is at the home of Landon's parents, who live in the neighborhood of Dunbar, about a 20 minute drive from most central hotels. According to Google this is a 2-hour walk. We therefore recommend arranging your own dinner that night, or biking. If you cannot attend, we look forward to seeing you at our special Saturday night event, which will be held after Shabbat.

Question

What if I want to extend my trip? What else is there to do in British Columbia?

Answer

We are so glad you asked. Vancouver is a gateway to some of the most beautiful spots on the West Coast. If you plan to extend or come a few days early, we have two recommendations. #1: Go to Whistler! Follow in Landon's boyhood footsteps - or ski tracks for that matter. Just two hours north along the stunning Sea to Sky Highway is North America's #1 ranked ski resort. World-class facilities for ski and snowboarders as well as a host of other winter-related activities. If planning to visit, make sure to book early as hotels fill up. #2 Go to Victoria. Situated on Vancouver Island, this charming small city on the ocean is BC's capital and features some stunning Victorian architecture. It's also home to the world famous Butchart Gardens. The journey there on the BC Ferry or a Seaplane is worth the trip alone.

Question

Is Vancouver's coffee obsession a real thing?

Answer

Yes it is. We used to have a corner with two Starbucks! We are also home to many amazing local coffee shops. Some favorites include Elysian, Caffe Artigiano, and 49th Parallel. When in doubt, you can always stop by a Tim's (i.e. Tim Horton's).

Question

I want to bring some gifts home to friends and family. Any recommendations?

Answer

Firstly, thank you for supporting the local economy! Purdy's Chocolates is a Landon and Ellis fave, especially their Himalayan Pink Salted Caramels. They also do truffles filled with maple or Canadian ice wine. Multiple locations. For a slice of iconic Canadiana, head on over to the Hudson's Bay flagship store downtown where you'll find an array of products featuring the famous 4 stripe pattern. This is where the original wool point blanket began. For fun Canadian clothing and leather, walk over to ROOTS on Robson St. Looking for old-school souvenirs? Go to Gastown where you'll find the largest selection. Also don't forget that your Skyride pass to Grouse includes a 20% discount at the three official Grouse Mountain gift shops. And when in doubt, grab some maple syrup :)
