After a winter snowstorm on February 18, 2015, we each found ourselves in heavy conversation at the now defunct Harvest Bar & Grill. The event was a Young Black Professionals (YBP) Speed Dating event --Yes we said Speed Dating-- and it went as you may have expected. The event began two hours late; the promised hor d'oeuvres were non-existent; and there were thirty beautiful black women ready to meet and greet the.... EIGHT black men in attendance. For this to be a YBP event, the man making the most connections was a sixty-five year old retired "playa from the Himalayas" who was dressed to the nines. In truth, neither of us were interested in attending the event but were each convinced by our wonderful friends (Thanks ya'll!). We met early in the event, and though our conversation was brief, we talked about everything from the Michigan Wolverines, to Probation, Genghis Khan, and JESUS. Jay was also enthralled with LaMia's hat that belonged to her father who had passed the year before. After exchanging information, Jay was the first to call and the conversation continued as it had never ended. We discovered each others desire to be closer to the Lord, as Jay was fasting for Lent and LaMia had recently returned from a two year mission's trip. We also discovered our shared love for food, fitness and music....and the rest is history.
