Yes! Taos is beautiful, but not particularly convenient to get to. We totally understand if joining us there this summer is not in the cards for you, and we look forward to seeing you another time in the not-so-distant future!
Great question! If you live in, let's say, Pennsylvania, or New York, or another cool place that is far away from New Mexico, the simplest way to get to Taos is to fly into Albuquerque (ABQ, Albuquerque International Sunport) and drive 2+ hours north to Taos. You can fly into Santa Fe as well, which is 1+ hours from Taos; but it's a smaller airport with fewer direct flights. We know that it is not easy to get to Taos if you have to fly, and it's a long drive for our family and friends in southern NM as well, so please don't feel pressured to make the trip if it is too much trouble!
The main party on Saturday is a short 3-4 minute drive from downtown/plaza, and the welcome party on Friday is just a block off of the plaza. Some people may prefer to stay close to downtown/the plaza to be walking distance or a quick drive to shops, restaurants, and bars and the wedding activities. Others might prefer to be in the Ski Valley (20-30 mins from downtown), which will be cooler temperature-wise, and has its own set of restaurants, shops and activities. Other people may want to stay on the mesa in Arroyo Seco or El Prado - lots of cool spots out there, some with more room to stretch your legs (7-30 minutes from downtown). If you would like specific advice on location please just reach out to Bree or Chris. We know some friends prefer AirBnbs/VRBOs, while others prefer a hotel, and others might want to camp. Chris's dad, Stefan, and his partner, Theresa, have generously offered some camping spots on their property where the main party is - if you are interested in camping there please contact Chris or Bree. HOTEL SUGGESTIONS: – Casa Benavides Inn (in town, walking distance to shops, restaurants) https://www.casabenavides.com/ – Historic Taos Inn (in town; room rate when you use BREE&CHRIS at checkout): https://taosinn.com/ or use this link directly: https://app.mews.com/distributor/dcbf397f-5467-48b7-bd09-b11700f243d7?mewsVoucherCode=BREE%26CHRIS – Hotel La Fonda de Taos (on the Plaza): https://www.lafondataos.com/ – The Blake at Taos Ski Valley: https://www.skitaos.com/stay
Taos in August is generally warm/hot during the day (80s/low 90s), with temperatures dropping significantly at night (50s/60s). In the summer, Taos can also get rain/monsoons, so there's a chance for some showers as well, and when it rains it can get pretty chilly. Layers are helpful with such a range in weather. The elevation is 7,000 ft, so the sun can be hot and intense when it's out– make sure to wear sun protection and drink lots of water! If you stay near town or out on the mesa, it's a bit warmer than up in the Ski Valley.
Sure! If you want to add on a few extra days to your trip, you may be interested in: – spending a night or two in Santa Fe (check out the plaza, Santa Fe National Forest, even bopping over to Jemez Springs or the Valles Caldera) – spending a night at Ojo Caliente (magical hot springs/spa) – going to Abiqui Lake and/or visiting Georgia O'Keefe's Ghost Ranch – floating and/or camping near the Chama River – checking out Bandelier National Monument for hiking and petroglyphs – flying into Colorado (Colorado Springs/Denver) and doing a slow drive down into northern NM (Pagosa Springs, Durango, Sand Dune National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnision National Park) Chris also suggests calling us, because he thinks it will be easier to give specific advice based upon your interests, but he also doesn't understand the nuance of a FAQ page for a wedding website.
