Although it feels like we've been goofing around together forever, we got our start just a little while ago. We met at a crawfish boil in San Francisco, hosted by the inimitable Peter "Sweet Pea" Capraro. Pete and Mike are old college frenemies from their Columbia days, and Mike was in town from LA for the weekend. Lala had actually overlapped with Mike and Pete for a couple years while she was at Barnard across the street from Columbia, but the two never met then -- probably for the best! But Lala was at the crawfish boil, at the invite of her best friend from growing up, Sarah, who happened to be Pete's significant other (and now wife, but we'll get back to that later!). Mike and Lala found themselves sitting next to each other in camping chairs, beer in hand, an eye on the giant vat of crawfish and corn. Mike was immediately taken by this loud girl who was about to move to Boston, and made a mental note. Lala has a pleasant but vague memory of this meeting.
Fast forward a few years, and Lala's back in SF. Mike is now a doctor (not that kind) and has also moved up to SF. Sarah and Pete's wedding is just a few weeks after Mike's arrival, and he has a plan. No one will ever know what that plan was, however. Instead, there was a first kiss on the school bus shuttle, followed by Mike asking Lala out on a date the next morning while wearing a tie-dye mumu. Lala thought Mike looked surprisingly good in the mumu and made a mental note. All Mike can remember is that she said yes.
Many creative dates, travel adventures, and spontaneous sidewalk dance sessions later, Lala continues to be amazed and inspired by Mike's enthusiasm for so many things, and his uncanny ability to keep her grounded. Mike loves Lala's adventurousness, McGyver-iness, and obsession with turning the negative into the productive -- he thinks this bodes well for the future. People have said that hanging out with us is like being with two rambunctious 12-year old boys -- this is not untrue! Infinite thanks to our friends for tolerating us, and for being weird right along with us. We're also so grateful for each other's families for raising and shaping the person whom we love so much. And special thanks to Sarah and Pete for bringing us together -- who woulda thunk it?
