How We Met

9.26.14 (but Facebook says we “became friends” may of 2014)

Kylin went to a show to see Kyle Flanagan play at the Unicorn Gardens Retirement Home and lingered to hang near the fire. Kevin returned to Unicorn Gardens, where he lived, after playing a show at Steady Sounds. Kelsey Hulvey, Kevin’s roomate, had previously invited Kylin camping with her and her roommates in a couple weeks. Someone named Kevin was sitting near the fire and Kylin introduced herself. They talked and Kylin didn’t get up from her seat (and didn’t leave in general) until Kevin asked for her phone number. The camping trip was their second official date the first week of October and they have been adventuring ever since.

All the times we didn’t meet

2004-2014

Kylin and Kevin have lived in the same city, been at the same shows, drank at the same bars for about 10 years prior to becoming acquainted. Their first non meeting was in the fall of 2004 at a Me Without You show in the VCU student commons. They also continued to not meet at many shows at the Boulevard house, where Kevin lived and played music. Still not meeting at NY Deli for comedy night where Kylin most certainly got served whiskey gingers by Kevin. Again not meeting at Don’t Look Back, not even when Kylin hosted her 27th birthday party there on an evening where Kevin was definitely bartending. They are both thankful the universe kept them apart so they could be wild, love others and grow. They are most excited to grow together now as a family 6 years after officially meeting.

First I Love You’s

October 7th 2014 and March 26th 2015

During Kylin and Kevin’s first conversation, Kevin described his grandfather’s recent passing. He had take the train up to Lake George, a favorite spot of the family’s, to celebrate his grandfather’s life. When Kylin inquired about the funeral details Kevin explained that the family had gathered to celebrate his late grandpa’s birthday, and had dressed him up in his favorite outfit, positioned with his favorite book. Kylin knew in that moment Kevin would fit right in her extended family, who loves celebrating life whenever possible. A couple weeks later Kylin has a little too much spirits on her birthday while camping with Kevin and told him she loved him by the lake. It then started to rain and Kylin refused to leave the lake so Kevin carried her back to the tent🙃. *Sidenote she hasn’t had a drink since. Kevin took a little longer to utter the sentiment. Scout, his beloved feline companion had fallen ill and the time had come to put him down. Kevin and Kylin spent the rest of the afternoon exploring an abandoned factory near the vet’s office, getting greasy food from 821, and having drinks at some bar. Back at Unicorn Gardens, instead of a nightcap Kylin suggested they smash some empty bottles in the alley, to release some anger and sadness from scout’s passing. After the ritual a teary eyed Kevin grabbed Kylin’s shoulders and mumbled “I think I love you” to which Kylin responded “I know I love you!”

Covid Bombed Our Previously Scheduled Lives

March 2020

Both of our industries (booze and massage) have been severely affected by Covid 19. Instead of sitting and waiting for life to resume as usual, we have decided to go on a several week long road trip following our wedding, with the final destination being Austin, TX. Kevin will begin working under an electrician friend he knows there and will begin a 4 year apprenticeship to become a journeyman in the electrician’s union. We are VERY SAD to leave Richmond and our WONDERFUL IRREPLACEABLE community. Please consider visiting us, once we have a home you can visit!
