Venice Marco Polo Airport

This is not the closest airport to Rijeka; however, it is a great airport to use if you want to visit Venice upon arriving to Europe or before heading back home. You wont need a rental car in Venice but you may want one to get to Rijeka as a bus may take an extra half hour or more so plan accordingly.

Zagreb International Airport

If Venice isn’t on your todo list we would recommend Zagreb Airport. It’s a new airport and easy to navigate. Again we would recommend getting a rental car from here which will be much more comfortable and convenient than a bus and while train is also an option from here is is NOT recommended.

Trieste Airport (Friuli Venezia Giuliano)

While this is technically the closest airport to Rijeka it is located in Italy meaning you will need to pass the Slovenian and Croatian boarders, being checked and questioned at each, which may cause travel time to take longer.

Rental Car

All airports listed have several rental car services to choose from. I would recommend booking in advance especially those of you who aren’t comfortable driving a manual car. Call ahead and make sure they will have an automatic vehicle reserved for you.

Rome to Rio

This website gives you all the possible ways to travel from point A to point B. As you will see traveling by train will take an absurd amount time and is not recommended. Traveling by bus is an option but in some instances can double your travel time when compared to taking a rental car.
